At the end of the 70, modified pickup trucks and sport is becoming popular in mud racing and tractor pulls gained popularity. Many truck owners had created lifted trucks with suspension for competing in those events, and soon create competition for the “biggest truck”. The trucks that earned more attention were Bob Chandler’s Bigfoot, Fred Shafer, Jack Willman Bear Foot father, Jeff Dane King Kong. At that time, tires of the trucks were larger than 48 inches (1.2 m) in diameter.

On June 14, 1974 Bob Chandler drove over cars in a field by what is believed to be the first monster truck that destroyed cars. Chandler drove Bigfoot over a couple of cars in a field as evidence of the ability of the truck and filmed for promotional use in your shop. An event promoter saw the video of the destruction of cars and asked Chandler if he could do it in front of an audience. Initially hesitant, Chandler eventually agreed. After a few small shows, Chandler made the show at the Pontiac Silverdome in 1982. In this show, Chandler also debuted a new version of Bigfoot with 66-inch wheels (1.7 m) in diameter. In an earlier event in the ’80s, when he ran even Bigfoot terra wheels 48 “, Bob George, one of the owners of a motorsport promotion called Truck-a-rama, it is said that created the term” monster truck “when referred to Bigfoot. The term “monster truck” became a generic name for all trucks with huge wheels sizes.

The debate over who made the first destruction of cars is sometimes disputed. In the late 1970s and early 1980s is said that King Kong had destroyed cars at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, Wisconsin. Another truck, known as High Roller, was also documented by destruction of cars in Washington state before Bigfoot. The mud truck pulled by tractors Arizona called Cyclops, then managed by brothers Dykman, is also known to destroy cars rather than Bigfoot.

Both King Kong and Bigfoot Bear Foot followed with wheels 66 inches in diameter, and soon other monster trucks, such as King Krunch, USA-1, and Virginia Giant were built. These old trucks were built from standard chassis, which were reinforced using leaf spring suspension, normal body and axles to support military wheels. As a result, the trucks were extremely heavy (usually 13,000 to 20,000 pounds) and most of the wheels had to join them in the file.

By the early ’80s, the monster truck show performed as separate exhibits into strips or truck in mud racing events. In 1985, large developers, such as the USHRA and TNT Motorsports, began to run regularly with monster trucks. The races, as they are today, were arrancones racing, bull in a course with obstacles. The change to racing eventually led to the truck owners to build more light trucks with more power. The establishment of the first championship points of TNT in 1988 expedited the process and began using computers based lane straight frames, fiberglass bodies and lighter axle components to reduce weight and gain speed.

In 1988, to standardize the rules for construction and truck safety, Bob Chandler and George Carpenter formed the Monster Truck Racing Association (MTRA). The MTRA established safety rules to sort the monster trucks. The organization still plays a large role in the development of sport in the U.S. and Europe.

With racing taking precedence, several teams began to think in new ways about how the trucks could be built. Towards the end of 1988, Gary Cook and David Morris debuted Equalizer, a truck combination of coil springs and shocks as the main source of suspension instead of springs and dampers. In 1989, Jack Willman father, now with his own truck, Taurus, debuted as a new truck which used a four-link suspension springs and dampers on the structure, and weighed about 9,000 lbs. Still, the newest wine from Chandler, also in 1989, in which his Bigfoot VIII had a full tubular chassis and long travel suspension with cantilever springs and nitrogen to control the suspension. The truck revolutionized as the monster trucks were built, and in some years the biggest teams created similar vehicles.

In 1991, TNT was purchased by USHRA and their points were brought together. The Special Events championship began to grow in popularity as in sports teams qualifying open invitational tournaments that the USHRA not have. The Special Events series lost PENDA auspices in 1996, but the series went on. PROMT series began in 2000.

Although the races were dominant in the competition, USHRA events began to have freestyle exhibition in early 1993. The shows have developed drivers, most notably Dennis Anderson and Grave Digger popular, began to ask for time to go out and perform stunts if they lost in the early rounds of racing. Developers began to realize the popularity of freestyle among fans and in 2000 the USHRA began having the freestyle as a judged competition at events, and even award a championship freestyle.

Monster Jam is now the biggest promotion of monster trucks, touring not only the United States, also Canada and parts of Europe. Other promotions include Checkered Flag Productions, AMP Tour, Special Events 4 Wheel & Off Road Jamboree, Major League of Monster Trucks, Extreme Monster Truck Nationals MTRSS, and Monster Truck Challenge Monster Nationals.
